Expansion: Silvera welcomes 500 residents in eight buildings

April 1 was a significant day for Silvera. After four months of preparation, Silvera welcomed 500 new residents in eight buildings into our organization. All the units offer independent living for low-income seniors.

This expansion is the result of a decision by the Government of Alberta in December 2024 to rescind another organization’s status as a housing management body. At that time, the government said Silvera would begin operating 520 units on April 1, which is one-third of the previous organization’s Government of Alberta portfolio. Calgary Heritage Housing and Onward Homes were selected to operate the other two-thirds of the portfolio.

“We are pleased to welcome more than 500 new residents to Silvera,” says Kyle Fawcett, Silvera’s Chief Executive Officer. “This decision shows the government of Alberta trusts Silvera’s expertise and reputation as a seniors’ housing provider.”

Kyle believes there are a number of reasons why Silvera was chosen to serve in this role.

“This recognition is partly based on the fact that we consistently receive high satisfaction rates on our annual resident surveys, and we’ve won Postmedia’s Readers’ Choice Award for seniors’ housing in Calgary for the last four years,” Fawcett says. “We look forward to showing our newest residents they can expect to receive consistent, competent, respectful and responsive service at Silvera.”

All the new residents have been provided with a welcome letter from Silvera, a resident handbook, a survey and a fridge magnet with contact information.

Meetings will be held in all buildings in April to give residents a chance to ask questions and learn more about what it means to live in a Silvera community.

Silvera now operates 36 buildings with more than 2,320 residents.
