In recognition and celebration of our 60th anniversary, Silvera interviewed a variety of individuals to learn more about the remarkable people who make up and contribute to our organization – employees, residents, board members, donors, volunteers, and more. These individuals are true “Silvera Diamonds” – as strong and resilient as our organization over the past six decades. Thank you to each of you who help to make us what we are. Here’s to another 60 years!
Last fall, Mike Fredrickson was driving through Bridgeland to a pizza restaurant he had just opened when he noticed a collection of Silvera communities near 11 St NE. He didn’t know what Silvera was, so he went home and Googled it. And then he had an idea.
Mike, a former Vice-President of Operations at Rogers, got into the pizza business a few years ago when his former boss encouraged Mike to join his growing company, Papa Murphy’s Pizza.
Since joining the Papa Murphy’s team as Vice-President of Franchise Sales and Operations, Mike has opened seven stores in Calgary, with several more to open this year. The Bridgeland store opened in spring 2022.
“When I learned about our Bridgeland neighbours at Silvera, I figured there had to be a way we could partner to make a community connection for us both,” says Mike.
He sent an email to Nadine Maillot, Silvera’s Senior Manager of Stakeholder & Donor Relations, offering a discount to all employees and residents. They began speaking about what else Mike and his team could do to help Silvera.
“We decided to donate two dollars to Silvera from every order over $25 on Mondays,” Mike says. The offer is available at all Papa Murphy’s locations across the city.
They have also created a special menu for Silvera residents, who can purchase ‘take and bake’ or cooked, personal pizzas at a discount.
“Papa Murphy’s is known for our community involvement,” says Mike. “It’s important to us to try to find a way to help out wherever we can, and to be a strong part of the communities where we operate.”
As he’s met with people at Silvera, he has a greater appreciation and understanding of why it’s so important for families of seniors to know their families are in a safe place, to have meals and someone looking out for them.
“Aging is coming for us all,” he acknowledges.
While the partnership between Silvera and Papa Murphy’s is in its infancy, Mike believes it will continue to grow with further promotion.
“We look forward to deepening our connection with Silvera in 2023,” he says.
