19 June 2023
Last week’s 16th annual Silvera employee conference was a fun opportunity for about 200 employees to get together, learn and grow outside of their regular daily jobs. The theme of the two-day event on June 12 and 13 was “Moving to Mastery” and featured a number of guest speakers, presentations and development sessions.
Employees had an opportunity to network and catch up with one another in between presentations about living Silvera’s values, “mastering your mess” and mental health first-aid for seniors.
A highlight of the conference was hearing former Humboldt Bronco Tyler Smith speak about his personal journey following the tragic 2018 accident where he and his junior hockey team were involved in a collision with a semi-truck on their way to a play-off game. Tyler lost 16 of his teammates, staff members, and coaches, while he and 12 others survived. Since then, Tyler has spent a lot of time prioritizing his mental recovery and now shares his story as a mental health advocate.
Service of Excellence Awards
Several Silvera employees were also recognized at the conference with Long Service Awards and Service of Excellence Awards.
Lois Dougan, a 45-year employee who is a Dining Attendant at Gilchrist Commons, received the Randy Adrian Memorial Award as well as a long-service award. This special award recognizes a Silvera employee who has exemplified our values and demonstrated a high standard of consistent excellence in their work, and someone who has served in several of our communities over the better part of their career.
“Lois is Silvera’s longest serving employee, serving for 45 years of dedication and commitment,” CEO Arlene Adamson told employees gathered at the conference. “From the day she started she’s been a role model to all other employees and an advocate for seniors.”
Lois was one of 46 Silvera employees who reached long-service milestones in 2023 for reaching five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 40 and 45 years of service.
